So you bought a candle... now what?
While our candles can be luxurious, relaxing, and comforting, they need a little TLC to assist them along the way.
With DC Co. Candles, you can expect 40 + hour burn times for our 5.3 ounce candles and 65 + hour burns for our 12 ounce candles. In order to achieve the highest quality burn, here's what you should do.
1. During the first burn of your candle, be ready to let your candle burn for about an hour.
Letting your candle burn for about an hour will allow the melt pool (the melted wax from being burned) reach the edges of the candle jar. This provides a stronger scent throw for your candle that way you can smell it without being right over your candle. Burning until the melt pool reaches the edge of the jar also contributes to a cleaner burn so that your candle doesn't begin to tunnel and waste wax.
2. Trim your wick after burning, right before you relight your candle.
It’s best practice to trim wicks after burning your candles for a couple of reasons!
- When your flame is burning around and dancing, it shows your wick is ready to be trimmed. Wild, dancing flames can lead to high levels of soot being released, and while it isn’t harmful, it can be displeasing, as well as dangerous for it could result in an increased risk of fire. So we trim down to about a 1/4 inch of exposed wick and relight!
- Wicks burning too high can result in your candle burning too hot, which causes the wax and the fragrances, to burn too quickly. This then leads to a reduced burn time and weaker scent from your candle.
- Trimming your wicks allows for what we call a “clean burn,” simply meaning that there’s no wax buildup on the side of your jar. We don’t want any wasted wax so we get the cleanest, safest, and best burn possible!
To trim your wick, you can use a wick trimmer or scissors work just fine, but can be a little messier!
3. Burn your candle NO LONGER than 4 hours.
It's crucial to the longevity of your candle that you do not burn longer than 4 hours. Preventing your candle from being lit longer than 4 hours will provide a much longer burn time and you will get the most out of the products. It's recommended to stay between 1-4 hours of burn time, then letting your candle harden again for about 2-3 hours, trim your wick, and finally relight. Burning your candle for too long will lead to "mushrooming," where the flame becomes too large and dangerous, while releasing smoke and soot.
4. Ensure your candle is placed in a safe, stable place where it won't be disturbed during it's burn.
Candles need a stable surface to burn on where they won't be at risk of causing a fire. A clear countertop, or table top, would be most desirable to prevent injuries or damage. The vessels used at Dinan Candle Co. are safe jars that can hold a large amount of heat, but safety and satisfaction are our top priority, place your candle in a spot where it is least likely to cause damage, then let the jar and wax cool for at least an hour before handling.
5. Avoid places that are heavily drafty, near large air currents, or vents.
As previously mentioned, candles need a safe, undisturbed place for the best quality burns. Drafts, air currents, and vents can disturb candles burns with rushes of air that then affect soot production and the candles ability to achieve an even burn.
6. Use a wick snuffer to extinguish your candle.
While blowing on a candle to extinguish the flame can seem harmless, it could produce smoking or wax splatter. To prevent possible injuries or harm, use a wick snuffer to put out your candle.
7. When your candle reaches the bottom of the jar, stop using it with about half an inch of wax remaining.
Burning a candle all the way to the bottom on the vessel can result in the container reaching a dangerous temperature that could cause overheating, heat damage, or even cracks in your container. To prevent these possibilites, leave about half an inch of wax in the container when extinguishing it for the final time. If you want to reuse, or refill your jar, use a mug warmer to warm the rest of the wax to then dispel, or place the candle in the freezer. This will make the wax shrink and it should be easier to remove.
Tips for Candle Usage:
-Never leave a candle burning while unattended
-Always burn on a protective, heat-resistant surface
-Burn in a safe area, away from flammable objects
-Keep out of the reach of children and animals
Wax Melt Care and Safety Guidelines:
- Choose a Suitable Wax Warmer: Select a wax warmer that is designed specifically for wax melts. Ensure it has a stable surface and is placed away from flammable materials.
- Read Manufacturer's Instructions: Always read and follow the manufacturer's instructions provided with your wax warmer before use.
- Use Recommended Amount: Place one or two wax melts in the top dish or bowl of your wax warmer. Avoid overfilling the warmer, as this can lead to overflow and spillage.
- Heat Source: If using an electric wax warmer, plug it into a suitable outlet. If using a tea light-powered warmer, place a lit tea light candle in the designated compartment beneath the wax dish.
- Melt Responsibly: Allow the wax melts to melt slowly and evenly, releasing their fragrance into the air. Do not attempt to speed up the melting process by adding additional wax melts or increasing the heat source.
- Monitor Wax Warmer: Keep an eye on the wax warmer while it is in use to ensure it is functioning properly and to prevent overheating. Do not leave the wax warmer unattended while in operation.
- Keep Out of Reach: Place the wax warmer in a location where it is out of reach of children and pets to prevent accidental burns or spills.
- Allow Cooling Time: Once you have finished using the wax warmer, allow the wax to cool and solidify before handling or removing it. Do not attempt to move or touch the wax while it is still hot.
- Clean Wax Warmer Regularly: Clean the wax warmer regularly to remove any residual wax buildup. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning and maintenance.
- Discontinue Use if Issues Arise: If you experience any issues or abnormalities with your wax warmer, such as overheating, smoking, or strange odors, discontinue use immediately and contact the manufacturer for assistance.
By following these usage and safety guidelines, you can enjoy the delightful fragrance of wax melts safely and responsibly in your home
